Qingyuan Xingsi

(Seigen Gyoshi) 660-740

Qinqyuan is a little known figure although three of the five traditional schools of Chinese Zen trace their lineage through him and his student Shitou Xiqian.

There are several traditional stories about Qingyuan.  One tells of a monk coming to him and asking “What is the great meaning of the Buddhadharma?”, to which Qingyuan is said to reply, “What is the price of rice in Luling?”

After giving dharma transmission to Shitou he was said to have given his goodbyes to his monks then sat cross-legged and died.
